RED ROCK DEMOCRATIC CLUB

MEETING MINUTES

 

Call to order:

The Red Rock Democratic Club regular meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on May 28, 2008 by Steve Fernlund, President. 

 

Approval of the minutes of previous meeting (s):

The April 23, 2008 meeting minutes were reviewed by members in lieu of being read.  Several members moved to accept the minutes as presented and numerous members seconded the motion.  The meeting minutes were unanimously approved. 

Reports of officers and committees:

Treasurer’s Report presented by Steve Fernlund

The balance on hand as of April 23, 2008 was $5,616.67.  Income received from dues ($105.00) and the club raffle ($74.00) totaled $179.00.  Reimbursement was made to the following members:  Ed Fishman (stamps, $40.75) and Traci Lawrence (coffee, $25.86).  As of May 28, 2008 the remaining account balance was $5,729.06.   Members simultaneously moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report and numerous members seconded the motion.  Members approved the Treasurer’s Report, one opposed.

 

President’s Comments (Steve Fernlund)

  • Special thanks to Thelma Perry, Ann Fields, Betty McLeod, Maxine Muse, and Traci Lawrence for calling club members regarding tonight’s meeting.
  • The club extends its gratitude to Paul and Traci Lawrence for providing refreshments.
  • Many, many thanks to Traci Lawrence who coordinated the activities of the Telephone and Meeting Announcement Committees.
  • The Nevada State Democratic Party Delegate Selection Plan established diversity goals that were easily met and exceeded at the state convention in Reno as outlined below:

  • The June 25th meeting will feature Steve Rypka, Green Living Consultant and Scott Rutledge, the Nevada Conservation League.
  • Meet the Candidates at the July 23rd Red Rock Democratic Club meeting.
  • Ellen Sterling will co-chair the Ways and Means Committee.  Fundraising ideas such as plays (Jersey Boys), movies, local shows, and an ice cream social have been discussed.        
  • Bill Warner and Carolyn Renaud will co-chair as Volunteer Coordinators.
  • Audrey Ehrlich is chairing the Membership Committee.
  • Congressional candidate Dina Titus is opening her campaign office on Saturday, May 31st located at 3711 East Sunset Road.

Program:

Keynote speaker Lorrie Brown, Nevada State Senator 1992-94, lawyer and educator, and current Director of the Secular Coalition for America, commented on church/state issues at the local, state, and national level.  A question and answer period followed the presentation.

 

Doug Basham, talk radio host, 1230 AM, KLAV, emphasized how the public should take back the media from large conglomerates.

 

Announcements: 

  • “The Perfect Storm” of Democratic candidates (Shirley Breeden, Senate District 5, Ellen Spiegel Assembly District 21, Allison Herr AD 23 and April Mastroluca AD 29) will hold a rally, meet and greet, superwalk and barbeque at the Trail Canyon Park on Saturday, June 7th at 9:30 a.m.  says Greg Espisito.
  • Patty Bifano announced that the Clark County Democratic Party is hosting a fundraiser, “Celebrate America”, on June 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Government Center amphitheater.  Tickets are available at the Democratic Party headquarters and at tonight’s meeting.
  • Peggy Maze-Johnson resigned as Executive Director of the Clark County Democratic Party.
  • The representative for Allison Copening, candidate for State Senate District 6, had to leave and will not be speaking this evening.
  • Peggy Pierce, Assemblywoman District 4, is running for her fourth term.  She briefly discussed current funding issues, noting that Nevada has the fewest number of government employees.
  • Andrew Martin announced his candidacy for Assembly District 13.
  • Carlos Blumburg discussed his candidacy for Assembly District 2.
  • Cynthia Giuliani discussed her candidacy for Family Court, Department K.
  • Vincent Ochoa spoke of his candidacy for Family Court, Department K.
  • Barbara Karp talked on behalf of Judge Lisa Kent, Family Court Department J.
  • Greta Muirhead is running for Family Court, Department I.
  • Josh Kunis announced his candidacy for District Court Judge, Department 8.
  • Gloria Sturnman spoke on behalf of Nancy Allf, State Supreme Court candidate.

 

Member Comments and Concerns:

  • Mike Selvage asked candidates or their representatives to provide information for the Clark County Democratic website.
